I just need to be very clear on the wrist action during the full swing. I need to know about the wrist cock. If I am standing with my right arm straight ahead of me like in a handshake, arm parallel to the ground, is the wrist cock up and down, or back and forth. My palm faces the target and my thumb is on top. Is the wrist cock North and South, or East and West. In the backswing, when does the wrist cock start and when does it end? On the downswing, when does it begin and end? How high are the hands at the end of the full backswing? I think I have it, but I need to be sure. Gets confused in my mind sometimes. Thank you for the response. Buzz

Here is how we define the terms:**

Cocked and Un-cocked: Refers to the up and down motion of the wrists on a plane parallel to the palm.
Hinged and Unhinged: Refer to the sideways motion of the wrists in a plane perpendicular to the palm.

In actuality, the lead wrist cocks while the trail wrist both cocks and hinges. Both wrists are inactive at the beginning of the backswing and the cocking action of both wrists begins once the hands have passed the trail leg. The cocking motion continues to the top of the backswing. It is during the change of direction that the slight flattening of the shaft plane fully cocks the lead wrist and results in the cocked and hinged position of the trail wrist.

Midway to impact during the forward swing, the lead arm reaches a 45-deg angle relative to the ground. The lead wrist cock is maximized at this point in the swing, as is the right wrist position.

To reach impact, the trail arm accelerates past the trail hip and extends toward the ball, accompanying the acceleration of the lead arm. Extension of the trail arm further accelerates the uncocking of the lead wrist and the counterclockwise rotation of the lead arm. As the lead wrist uncocks and the lead forearm rotates, the club head is returned to the target line on plane with the leading edge of the clubface square to the target line. The trail wrist is uncocked and partially unhinged. The lead wrist is fully uncocked and slightly bowed. This bowing is a response to the dynamic forces placed on the wrist by the lagging clubhead.

Post impact the extension of the trail arm fully uncocks the trail wrist, although the wrist is not yet completely unhinged. The lead wrist responds by straightening, eliminating the bowing at the moment of impact. The trail arm is fully extended on plane, creating a straight line from the trail shoulder to the clubhead when viewed from the side.

As to your final question: The Top of the Backswing is reached when the lead shoulder and torso can no longer comfortably rotate without compromising the stability of the body. In other words, the lead arm swings back as far as it can while maintaining the stable trail leg position and spine tilt away from the target. This places the lead arm approximately horizontal to the ground for most, further for those more flexible.

I hope this clarifies...

**Disclaimer: For those of you who have never thought of any of this stuff, please continue to keep your concepts simple. The details above are only in response to a very analytical approach to swinging a golf club. While this too is valid, it is not for everyone, so please do not think any of the above is necessary to hit a ball to a target, it is simply a description of what happens in an ideal model.

Hi Ken. I had been trying to evaluate Stack and Tilt, The Golf Machine as described by Manzella, and Your version of Moe's swing. These last few months have forced me to find an indoor range and though pricey, the doppler radar measurements have proven the value of your swing thoughts as I understand them. I found your "Natural Golf Drills" DVD and the package including the book with Todd on the cover very helpful. The arm pumping drill was particularly helpful!

In the last several weeks I have enjoyed such physical relief from your simple swing (I tried that one last year and man was it complicated!) and was able to really crush the ball.

At 51, with an artificial hip, and a front leg 2" shorter than a trail leg, and using a 9 wood (I use only woods) I produced many shots like this:

9I 1 159 154 6 26 79 107 4866 0 19.8° 6.2°

w total carry roll height clb speed ball speed back sp side sp vert launch horiz launch

I really pull hard on my left arm when my shoulder turn gets my left arm parallel to ground and, following the drills, let my right hand extend and my left elbow fold I really load up my right side/trail leg and it feels so powerful! It is so cool to see Moe's recoil and the ball rocketing down the middle of the fairways! I find I must watch the ball with my head quiet as that guarantees my returning to impact with the same axis. My driver is about 230 ish indoors with a slight fade or draw as I utilize the TGM grids. I actually feel the shaft flex often and the ball compress and it is way cool! I am using an Adams "REdline" 9.5 driver with a reg shaft at an inch longer w/graphite.

I can also control my short iron trajectories by varying the ball placements which is vary promising!

Would a stiff shaft get my driver more distance? Senior shaft? Which tape/dvd set would you suggest when I do hit a rough patch next Spring as I'm bound to do?

After discussing your specs provided for your 9w with Andy G. and Joe, our clubmakers, they recommend a soft regular flex for your driver to optimize your clubhead speed. They were curious what exactly your driver length measured so you may want to contact them directly via email for more help. Andy can be reached at andyg@naturalgolf.com...

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Cheers!
