The “two hand chip without release” drill is fundamental to learning consistent center clubface contact.
It will help you train a firm lead wrist through impact with an independent arm swing and stable body. Start with a short iron (PW, 9 or 8) and a center ball position. Hold down on the handle for control and preset your weight to the lead foot for stability.
Keep your lower body quiet as you the motion by folding your trail elbow inward and then extending forward to strike the ball. Avoid any “flicking” or “rolling” of your wrists.
Your lead arm and clubshaft should remain aligned through impact and at the finish position.
It’s best to hold your finish for a “five count” to double check the following:
1. Lead forearm and clubshaft maintain alignment when viewed from face-on
2. Back of lead hand and clubface are square to the swing arc
3. Lead knee is over lead foot with weight predominantly on lead side
4. Body remains stable with both feet flat on the ground
This is the primary motion used for all shots inside of 40 yards and contains the keys to consistent impact.
When you practice, practice this drill!
