Catapult Your Game

Some notes from the "Canadian Cannon," Kelly Murray

Picture a catapult. You pull the lever back and release it. What is a catapult? We know it as a structure that has a solid base. It also has a leverage arm that when loaded with a weighted object, and when some form of energy loads the leverage arm, it can be contained in that loaded position ready for release on the trajectory and direction and distance the catapultor desires. In other words “Stabilize, Energize, Contain and Release.”

That’s what I grew up hearing when I turned pro in 1980 and hit the tour. I befriended legendary Moe Norman who spoke of a golf swing as a catapult. Using this method I found that I could hit fairways and greens with amazing regularity. I even started winning tournaments right off the bat as a young 25 year old. I also discovered I could win driving contests as I could hit the ball long and straight. In 1988 nationally in Canada I was given the name the “Canadian Cannon.”

Yes, You Can

We can all learn to do this. Loading a catapult is as simple as loading a slingshot. Another example would be throwing a baseball or skipping a rock. We all have the power to do this. The secret is in the quality of the swing motion – to do this with the fewest moving parts. If you’ve been reading my articles for the past 7 years, you’re aware of how I speak highly of Moe Norman. Moe was very similar to the character played by Dustin Hoffman in the movie “Rain Man” and luckily Barry Morrow who wrote the screenplay for “Rain Man” has also written “Dance the Green” – the Moe Norman story. Moe was a genius. He had the ability to simplify everything in the outside world down to the fewest moving parts and is known for a golf swing that all the top pros looked up to over the last 50 years. Imagine a golf swing that produces the most direct strike in golf with the fewest moving parts. Brilliant and amazing — you’ve just entered the world of Moe Norman. This is the swing that has produced 17 holes in one, 38 course records, wins of every tour event on the Canadian Tour many times and three 59s playing golf with his buddies.

Kelly Murray held the Canadian Tour Record of 60 (with 30 putts) for 16 years and has 3 tour victories in his 25 years on tour. He teaches Natural Golf and Power Driving at Virginia Golf Center and Academy in Washington DC/Clifton, VA. Kelly has been writing for Pros N’ Hackers since September 2001 and has starred the last 2 years on The Golf Channel’s hit series The Big Break VI: Trump National and The Big Break VII: The Reunion.
