Putting Perfection

As we all have learned — perhaps the hard way — you can't score well if you don't putt well.

Did you know that the average player has three to four 3-putts per round? It’s true, but you can do better. Making putts often hinges on confidence and one of the best drills to gain confidence in your putting ability is the Wagon Wheel Drill. This drill is one of many that are explained in the Natural Golf instructional video Putting Perfection that is now available for free viewing online here at The Moe Norman Golf Academy .

In the Wagon Wheel Drill, you surround a hole with six balls placed three feet from the hole, thus creating a “wheel” look. You can use your putter, which is about three feet long, to measure the distance from the hole to the ball. Another good idea is to place a tee at each spot from where you are putting to make it easy to re-spot your golf balls for successive attempts at the drill.

The goal here is to go entirely around the “wheel” making all six putts. If you miss one, keep going to see how many you can make, but then start over. To complete the drill you must make all six putts in one turn.

One of the best elements about this drill is that by surrounding the hole you will be faced with different breaks because you are putting from all sides of the hole. This is great for building up your confidence before you step on the golf course.

If you want to make the Wagon Wheel Drill more challenging over time, move the distances out to four, five and six feet.

This can also be a fun drill to do with a partner. Challenge one of your friends to a little Wagon Wheel “putt off” to see who can complete it first. It’s a great way to make the drill fun, plus it helps simulate a pressure situation that occurs out on the golf course when we're trying to keep pace with or beat your competitor.
